FORESIGHT

It’s not about the future, but about futures.

Foresight in the context of defense is a process that helps imagine and prepare for a wide gamut of future developments, especially regarding national security and global threats. It’s not about predicting exactly what will happen but about exploring a range of scenarios – both likely and less likely – and understanding which decisions can prepare us for them today. This is my job — or at least a part of it.

Morescenarios

Foresight doesn't give answers, but new questions.

Foresight helps us conquer the latent spaces of our imagination, to construct new thoughts in the present and prepare for the future.

WHY

Use the future

The method to protect us from phrases like “we should have known better.”

In the field of defense, foresight helps identify weak signals of change (such as new military technologies, geopolitical instability, or evolutions in warfare tactics) and build strategies that are pertinent, future-ready, and above all useful for people’s security.

In the past we fought traditional wars with soldiers, missiles, and tanks, but today there are new threats: cyberattacks, drones, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies.

Foresight in defense starts from all this and constructs multiple versions of the future: technologies never seen before, unknown tactics, science beyond the horizon, and new dilemmas, which could catch us unprepared. Their impact can transform, avert, or overturn future conflicts, and influence how the armed forces must be structured to face them. My task is to bring knowledge and help Allied countries and organizations adopt a proactive and evolved approach to using futures, anticipate threats, and make bolder, more decisive, and enduring strategic choices. In one word: winning.
